A dashboard that displays 10 days of my life in data. The dashboard features different data visualisations, graphs, and infographics showing my ability to convey data clearly and be visually interesting.
I started this project by collecting the data. I choose to track my modes of travel (bus, train, car, and walking), spending habits, and phone usage (screen time, notifications, and number of unlocks). I collected this data for 10 days to get a complete understanding of my habits that can be displayed effectively.
I began sketching to understand my layout. I was particularly interested in an infographic, as when researching data visualisation they really caught my attention.
Throughout this whole project I re-sketch my dashboard multiple times, altering the design layout every time. I added and removed elements to create a dashboard I am satisfied with.
After sketching, I developed the designs further in Figma. I continuously revised the layout in Figma and in sketches to make it user-friendly and visually effective.
For each of the elements that I was tracking, I wanted to display each day’s data as a line with a circle representing the data point.
When creating this effect there were overlapping circles that I knew would be most effective with the use of lowered transparency to increase visual clarity.
With each different kind of data needing its own colour, I choose to create a rainbow of circles, using the lowered transparency to full effect. Against a dark background, this made the infographic stand out.
During the prototyping, I experimented with Figma’s smart animation feature.
Unfortunately, due to the scale this caused it to be very hard for the data to be understood.
I made the choice to remove that feature and reworked the layout. I explored numerous options throughout this project to create something I am fully happy with.
This project had lots of challenges, with continuous reworking of the layout and graphs. Overall, I am very happy with the dashboard. Although it was a frustrating project, the work I put into it was worth it. Over summer I chose to go back over this project alternating the layout more and removing elements, improving it further with everything I have learnt.
The dashboard effectively shows how I spent a little over a week in my life clearly. This project has pushed me to work hard and explore a lot more options creating a better dashboard, creating a project that I am really proud of.
